chica follows a story of questioning my place in a relationship that was ultimately suffocating and unhealthy. it reflects the inner conflict of wanting to make things work, with the slow realization some people are not meant to be in one’s life forever. I may not always come across as sympathetic, in fact I still feel guilt over past behavior and worry whether I’ll revert to those unhelpful patterns. but! part of growth is acknowledging the ways I was wrong, no matter how justified or stuck I felt at the time.
these songs are uptempo and quite melodic, because I love contrasting heavy lyrics against energetic production. for me, processing is both rest (listening, writing, reflecting, sleep), coupled with outward expression (talking, singing, exercise, dance). I wouldn’t have written as seriously or had as much fun bobbing to the music if I didn’t balance both processes over time.
thank you to the friends and family who listened to the works in progress. your help mixing (spencer carson), songwriting (ernesto martin, gina foster), and brainstorming (elias and jillana nickel, alex borja) was invaluable as I explored this artform. I’ve sung, written, and edited for a long time, so bringing these elements together in one project was incredibly gratifying. I hope you can hear the effort and experiences put into this work.
